About this exercise

Hear where the echoes land.

A part has a delay on it. Match the reference’s: when the echoes land against the beat, how many times they come back, and on the last level how loud they are and a time that isn’t a note value.

How it works

  1. Play the reference, then switch to Yours.
  2. Turn the controls, compare again, and check when the echoes match.
  3. After a miss, open Help me hear it: your attempt, the difference doubled, and the correction.

What to listen for

Count against the beat. Tap along to the reference: does the first echo land on the next eighth, the next beat, or in between? Then count how many come back before they fade.

How it’s scored

Your first check scores out of 100. Time is scored as the ratio of the two times, so a neighbouring note value counts the same at any tempo; repeats in steps of feedback; the echo level in dB. The control furthest out decides. An average of 80 over five songs passes.

Levels

Level 1: straight notes only (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2). Level 2: every note value, dotted and triplet too (the closest pair, a dotted eighth and a quarter triplet, has to be told apart). Level 3: the repeats, with the time set. Level 4: time and repeats. Level 5: a free time in ms, the repeats and the echo level.

Every setting plays at the same loudness, so more echoes never just means louder.
