Mix Chops

Terms of Service

Last updated 25 October 2026

Mix Chops (“the Service”) is an ear-training site for mixing engineers at mixchops.com. It’s run by Dan Murtagh (ABN 48 815 594 360, “we”, “us”), a mix engineer and audio educator in Melbourne, Australia. By using Mix Chops you agree to these terms. Our privacy policy explains what we do with your information.

1. What Mix Chops is

Mix Chops trains your ears for mixing: EQ, compression, balance and space exercises on real music, with ranks, a daily session and an AI mentor. Much of it is free, with or without an account. Mix Chops Pro, a paid subscription, opens every level of every exercise, the Pro-only exercises, your plan for today, your own songs, more replies from the AI mentor and the full track library.

2. Accounts

Saving progress, Pro and some features need an account (Google, or a sign-in link by email). Keep access to your email address or Google account safe: whoever can sign in to it can use your Mix Chops account. One account is for one person. You can delete your account from your profile page; if it has a subscription that would renew, cancel that first.

3. Mix Chops Pro: the subscription

Pro is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly, through our payment provider, Stripe. Prices are in US dollars and are shown on the Pro page and at checkout, which may add applicable taxes. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year, and your card is charged the price for your plan, until you cancel. When you buy, checkout asks you to accept these terms.

4. The free trial

Where it’s offered, monthly Pro starts with a free trial of 7 days. One trial per account and per payment card. A card is needed at checkout, and nothing is charged during the trial. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, your subscription starts automatically when it does, and your card is charged the monthly price shown at checkout, then every month until you cancel. If you cancel during the trial you won’t be charged, and you keep Pro until the trial ends. A trial gives the same Pro as a paid month.

Yearly Pro has no trial: the year’s price is charged at checkout. If a payment fails, Stripe tries the card again over the following days and Pro stays on while it does; if the payment still can’t be taken, the subscription ends. We may change or withdraw trial offers at any time.

5. Cancelling and changing plans

You can cancel at any time from Manage billing on the Pro page, which opens Stripe’s billing portal, or by emailing us. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you’ve paid for (or the end of your trial): Pro stays on until then and you aren’t charged again. Your free progress, ranks and badges stay on your account whether or not you’re Pro.

You can switch from monthly to yearly in Manage billing; Stripe shows what you’ll pay before you confirm. During a trial the switch takes effect when the trial ends.

6. Prices, and the early price

Accounts made before Pro launched pay US$8 a month or US$79 a year, for as long as they stay subscribed. Checkout charges it automatically when you’re signed in to that account; there’s no code to enter. It belongs to that account and can’t be moved to another one. If you cancel and subscribe again later, we may charge the standard price then.

We may change Pro’s prices. A new price applies to an existing subscription only from a renewal at least 30 days after we’ve emailed you about it, and you can cancel before then. We may choose not to offer Pro, or a particular price, to some accounts.

7. Refunds

Subscription payments aren’t refundable for part-used months or years, except where you were billed in error or where the Australian Consumer Law gives you a right to a refund. If something is broken or you’ve been billed in error, email [email protected] and we’ll put it right.

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled to cancel your service contract with us, and to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. If the failure does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have problems with the service rectified in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and obtain a refund for the unused portion of the contract.

8. Acceptable use

Use Mix Chops to train your own ears. Please don’t:

  • download, copy, record or share the tracks, stems or exercises outside Mix Chops: they’re licensed to us for training here only;
  • share your account, or get around Pro, the trial rules or the daily and monthly limits;
  • scrape the site, overload it, or try to break into it or other people’s accounts;
  • use the AI mentor to produce anything unlawful, abusive or unrelated to training, or try to make it ignore its instructions;
  • use Mix Chops in any way that breaks the law or anyone else’s rights.

We may suspend or close an account that does, including a paid one, without refund of the current period, except where the law requires one.

9. Your own songs (Pro)

With Pro you can upload songs to train on. You keep all the rights you hold in what you upload, and you must have the right to use it this way: recordings are usually protected by copyright, and splitting a song into parts gives you no rights in the recording or the composition. By uploading, you give us a limited licence to process and store the song only to provide this feature.

Uploaded songs are split into parts by StemConsole (stemconsole.ai), another service run by Dan Murtagh. Your songs are private to your account. The parts are kept for about 90 days and then deleted, so a song may need adding again after that. Pro includes a monthly number of new songs (currently 10, each up to 10 minutes): a cap, not a target, and we may change it. We remove songs that are the subject of a valid copyright complaint, and may close accounts that receive repeated valid complaints.

10. Ask Dan, the AI mentor

Ask Dan is an AI mentor built on Dan’s teaching. Its replies are written by an AI model, not by Dan in person, and they can be wrong: treat them as coaching to test with your own ears, not professional advice. Replies are limited each day (currently about 100 for Pro and 10 for a free account); the limit is a cap, and we may change it. Don’t type personal information into it. The privacy policy explains what’s sent and kept.

11. Our content

The exercises, music, stems, words, design and software of Mix Chops belong to us or the people who license them to us. Using Mix Chops doesn’t give you any rights in them beyond using the Service under these terms.

12. The Service is provided “as is”

We work to keep Mix Chops running and accurate, but it may change, be interrupted or stop. We may add, change or remove exercises, tracks and features. To the extent the law allows, the Service is provided without warranties, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before it. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that can’t be excluded.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We’ll change the date at the top, and for significant changes let signed-in users know on the site or by email. Continuing to use Mix Chops after a change means you accept the new terms.

14. Law

These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia.
