Privacy Policy
Mix Chops is an ear-training site at mixchops.com, run by Dan Murtagh (ABN 48 815 594 360), a mix engineer and audio educator in Melbourne, Australia. This policy explains what information Mix Chops handles, why, where it is kept and what you can do about it. We handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, and we aim to meet the GDPR for visitors in the European Economic Area and the UK.
The short version
- You can use every exercise without an account. Your progress is then saved only in your own browser.
- An account is optional. If you create one, we keep your email address (and, with Google sign-in, your name and profile picture) and your training progress, so it follows you between devices.
- We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. We don’t send it your email address or name.
- When something on the site breaks, your browser sends us a short technical error report. It never includes your email address, name or account details.
- We don’t sell your information, show ads or share your data with advertisers.
- You can delete your account yourself at any time from your profile page.
1. Information we collect
Progress saved in your browser
When you train, Mix Chops saves your progress in your browser’s local storage: level scores, XP, rank, streaks, badges, daily-session history and your accuracy on each frequency band. It stays on your device and isn’t sent to us unless you sign in. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it.
Your account (optional)
If you sign in, we collect:
- Email sign-in: your email address.
- Google sign-in: the details Google shares with us, which are your name, email address, profile picture and a Google account identifier. We never see your Google password.
- Your training progress: the same progress described above, saved to your account so it syncs across devices.
- Sign-in records: our account provider keeps basic security logs, such as when you signed in and the IP address and browser used.
- The Pro founding list (only if you join): a note on your account that you joined and when, so we can email you when Mix Chops Pro opens. Ask us to take you off it at any time, or delete your account.
Usage analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to see how Mix Chops is used, such as which pages and exercises people open, how far they get, scores and which features they use. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information like your approximate location (country or city), device, browser and the page that referred you. We don’t send it your email address, name or account details. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Error reports
When something on Mix Chops goes wrong, such as a sound that won’t start, a track that won’t load or a sign-in link that has expired, your browser sends a short technical report: what failed, on which page and exercise, the site version, and your browser and country. A one-line summary goes to Google Analytics with the usage data, and the full report is stored with Cloudflare for 30 days so we can fix the problem. Reports never include your email address, name or account details (we strip anything that looks like one before storing it), we don’t store your IP address with them, and they don’t use cookies. They come to our own server, so blocking Google Analytics doesn’t stop them.
Mailing list (only if you join)
If you sign up for emails such as the EQ cheat sheet, your email address and the list you joined are stored by Dan Murtagh’s mailing system (the same one used for danmurtagh.com) and emails are sent through Resend. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
What we don’t collect
No payment details (Mix Chops has nothing to buy yet), no microphone or recordings (all audio is generated in your browser), no precise location, no contacts and no advertising identifiers.
2. How we use it
- To run your account and sync your progress between devices.
- To send you sign-in emails and, if you asked for them, mailing-list emails.
- To understand how Mix Chops is used and improve the exercises.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
- To meet our legal obligations.
For visitors covered by the GDPR, we rely on the performance of our service to you (your account and progress), your consent (mailing-list emails) and our legitimate interest in understanding and securing the site (analytics and security logs).
3. Who handles it for us
We use these service providers to run Mix Chops. They process information on our behalf and not for their own marketing.

Some of these providers operate outside Australia, so information may be processed overseas. We choose established providers with published security and privacy commitments.
We don’t sell or rent your personal information, and we don’t share it with advertisers or data brokers. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
4. How long we keep it
- Your account and progress: until you delete your account. It’s then removed straight away, apart from database backups, which roll over within 7 days.
- Analytics: kept by Google Analytics for up to 14 months.
- Error reports: 30 days (the summary in Google Analytics, up to 14 months).
- Mailing list: until you unsubscribe.
- Progress in your browser: until you clear it.
5. Your choices and rights
- Delete your account from your profile page. It removes your account and saved progress from our servers.
- Stop analytics by blocking cookies for mixchops.com or using a browser or extension that blocks Google Analytics. The exercises still work.
- Access or correct the personal information we hold about you, or ask any privacy question, by emailing [email protected]. We reply within 30 days.
If you’re in the EEA or UK you may also ask us to restrict or stop processing, request a copy of your data in a portable format, or withdraw consent at any time. You can complain to your local data protection authority.
6. Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Account data is protected by database rules that let each person read and change only their own progress. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee it. If a breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we’ll notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.
7. Children
Mix Chops isn’t directed at children under 13, and children under 13 shouldn’t create an account. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, email us and we’ll delete it.
8. Changes
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top, and for significant changes we’ll let signed-in users know on the site.
