About this exercise

Solo it. Then judge it in the mix.

One band on an instrument has been boosted or cut. Fix it while the instrument plays alone, then bring in the rest of the mix and adjust again. It shows how an EQ move that sounds right in solo can sound different in the track.

How it works

  1. Listen to the instrument solo and fix it with one band.
  2. Bring in the mix and listen again: keep your move or change it.
  3. Check, and compare your solo score with your score in context.

How it’s scored

The score is for your final version, in the mix. Your solo score is shown next to it so you can see what the context changed. Pass with a 70 average over five challenges.

Levels

Four levels: a boost on the bass, a boost on a higher instrument, a boost or a cut on the bass, and a subtle move on the higher instrument. Levels 1 and 2 are free. Levels 3 and up are part of Mix Chops Pro, and every level is open while Mix Chops is in early access.
