About this exercise

Get the balance back by ear.

A song plays as its parts, one fader each. Some of the faders have been knocked off. Put them back where they were, comparing with the original mix. Every version plays at the same loudness, so turning everything up gets you nothing: only the balance between the parts counts.

How it works

  1. Press Play and flip between Bypass and Problem. Which part jumped out, or sank?
  2. Drag that part’s fader. You’re now hearing Your Mix.
  3. Flip between Your Mix and Bypass until they match, then check.

How it’s scored

How close your mix comes back to the original, from 100 for the exact balance (at any overall level) to 0 for no better than leaving it. Soloing a part costs 4 points, once a part. Muting is free, as often as you like: pull a part out, bring it back, and you’ll hear how much space it fills. Pass with a 70 average over five challenges.

Levels

Five levels: one part, a big move; one part, a smaller move; two parts; three parts; then every fader, a dB or two each. In the first two the bass only ever goes up, since a quieter bass barely shows on laptop speakers. Levels 1 and 2 are free.
